Manchester City have reportedly opened talks with Liverpool over a potential deal for Cody Gakpo, in what could become one of the most surprising transfers of the summer.
City have made an approach for the Netherlands international as Enzo Maresca continues to strengthen his attacking options ahead of the new Premier League season. Liverpool are understood to value Gakpo at around £85 million, setting the stage for potentially significant negotiations between the two Premier League giants.
Gakpo has established himself as an important member of Liverpool’s attack since arriving from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023. The versatile forward has regularly operated from the left but can also play through the centre, giving him the flexibility that could appeal strongly to Maresca.
Manchester City are understood to be looking at attacking reinforcements after changes to their forward options this summer. Gakpo’s ability to play in several positions makes him an attractive target as City prepare for another demanding campaign across domestic and European competitions.
Liverpool, meanwhile, face an interesting decision over the player’s future. The Reds are close to bringing in Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola in a major deal, and his arrival could increase competition for attacking positions at Anfield.
That situation has naturally led to questions about Gakpo’s place in Andoni Iraola plans, although Liverpool have not indicated that they are actively looking to sell the forward.
City’s interest could now test Liverpool’s resolve. An £85 million valuation would make any potential transfer a major piece of business, particularly given that Gakpo remains under contract at Anfield.
There is currently no agreement between the clubs, and negotiations would still need to progress significantly before a transfer could be completed.
