Citizen TV reporter John Wanyama has resigned from Royal Media Services (RMS) to pursue the Malava Parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election.
Wanyama submitted his resignation notice on July 3, giving the media company a one-month notice. His last working day was August 4, 2026.
In his resignation letter, Wanyama said he had decided to leave journalism and pursue a career in public service by contesting for the Malava MP position.

The journalist, who was based in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, thanked RMS management and his colleagues for the support and opportunities he received during his time at the media house.
Wanyama also expressed appreciation to RMS Chairman S.K. Macharia, Vice Chairperson Mrs S.K. Macharia and Managing Director Wachira Waruru for their leadership and mentorship.
His resignation was formally accepted by RMS in a letter dated July 14, 2026.
RMS Human Resource Director Rose Wanjohi thanked Wanyama for his service to the company and wished him success in his future endeavours.
Wanyama’s exit comes amid increased scrutiny of journalists seeking elective political positions ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) recently announced plans to introduce strict guidelines governing journalists and media practitioners who declare political ambitions.
According to MCK Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo, the guidelines will establish clear timelines for journalists to resign from newsrooms before pursuing political office.
The proposed rules will also require journalists who declare political ambitions to immediately stop live hosting, anchoring and reporting, as well as other roles that could create a conflict of interest.
Wanyama becomes the latest journalist to leave the media industry to pursue elective politics ahead of the 2027 polls.
