Cholera Outbreak Reported in Parts of the Country as Several Lives Lost

The Ministry of Health has confirmed a cholera outbreak in various parts of the country.

Through a press release on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, the Ministry of Health outlined the symptoms of the disease, which included severe watery diarrhea, vomiting, muscle cramps and severe diarrhea.

According to the ministry, the symptoms appear two hours to five days after the infection.

The pandemic has so far been reported in three counties.

As of 6th April, the ministry recorded a total of 97 cholera including six deaths, with Migori having a total of 53 cases and 1 death reported.

Kisumu county, on the other hand, had a total of 32 cases and 4 deaths reported, whereas Nairobi county reported a total of 12 cases and 1 death.

The ministry, in collaboration with county governments, has decided to intervene towards the situation and introduced health worker training such as water sanitation and hygiene.

They have also introduced case management, where there will be testing of suspected cases.

The ministry has urged the public to maintain personal hygiene, drink only clean water (boiled or chlorinated), ensure food safety and avoid self-medication and traditional remedies.

The ministry has, therefore, reassured the public that the country is adequately prepared to manage and contain the outbreak.
