CCTV Records Cyrus Jirongo’s Last Moments Prior to Deadly Accident

CCTV footage obtained from Eagles Petrol Station along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway has provided new details on the final moments before the fatal road crash involving veteran politician Cyrus Jirongo.

The surveillance video captures a brief but crucial sequence of events in the early hours of the morning, shortly before the collision that claimed his life.

Time stamps on the footage show that at exactly 2:18 a.m., a white Mercedes-Benz, later confirmed to have been driven by Jirongo, entered the petrol station from the Nairobi-bound side of the highway.

The vehicle is seen accessing the station without indicating, driving past the fuel pumps without stopping to refuel.

Approximately 34 seconds later, the Mercedes abruptly makes a U-turn within the petrol station compound, moments before the fatal crash occurred.

At 2:19:17 a.m., the vehicle exits the petrol station and merges back onto the highway towards Nairobi.

Seconds later, at 2:19:25 a.m., CCTV captures a bus later identified as the one involved in the crash approaching the same stretch of road from the Nairobi side at what appears to be high speed, its headlights on full beam.

Moments after the Mercedes re-enters the highway, the bus slams into it, dragging the car an estimated 25 metres along the tarmac before it spins violently and comes to rest on the roadside.

By around 2:20 a.m., another vehicle passes the scene, its headlights briefly illuminating the wreckage as smoke rises from where Jirongo’s car had stopped.

A postmortem examination has established that Cyrus Jirongo died from blunt force trauma sustained in the crash.

Speaking on Wednesday, December 17, family pathologist Joseph Ndung’u said the former MP suffered severe injuries to the chest, abdomen, spinal cord and limbs.

He explained that Jirongo sustained crush injuries to the chest and abdomen, alongside a spinal injury, resulting in multiple fractures to the right hand and both legs.

Ndung’u further revealed that the late politician had extensive chest injuries, including fractured ribs, a perforated heart and ruptured blood vessels.
