Arsenal had won their opening four Premier League matches and conceded only one goal before Saturday’s game.

The defeat leaves Mikel Arteta’s side on 12 points from five matches and second in the Premier League table on goal difference.

Brighton’s victory moved them to third with 10 points from five matches.

The hosts have now scored 16 goals in their opening five league games, the highest total in the division at this stage.

The result also ended Arsenal’s hopes of starting the campaign with eight consecutive victories in all competitions, something the club had not achieved since 1903.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta acknowledged that Brighton were the better side, pointing to technical errors and lost duels as factors behind the defeat.

The defeat was Arsenal’s heaviest in all competitions since Brighton also beat them 3-0 in May 2023.
