Bobi Wine Restricted as Uganda Awaits Election Results

National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, is reportedly under heavy security as vote counting continues in Uganda’s presidential election.

In a statement, NUP said military and police officers have surrounded the opposition leader’s residence, effectively confining him and his wife to their home.

The party claimed that security personnel breached the perimeter fence and began setting up tents inside the compound.

NUP’s Head of Finance, Benjamin Katana, also confirmed the restrictions, stating that Bobi Wine’s movements and communication have been limited since security forces surrounded his home the previous evening.

Katana questioned the legality of Bobi Wine’s confinement, insisting that proper legal procedures should be followed if there are any allegations against him.

He argued that Wine’s home is not a designated place of detention and maintained that, if any offence has been committed, authorities should arrest him formally, present him in court, and handle the matter through the established legal process.

The reported house arrest comes as Uganda’s Electoral Commission continues tallying votes from Thursday’s presidential election.

Preliminary results released on Friday showed President Yoweri Museveni leading with 76.25 per cent, while his closest rival, Bobi Wine, trailed with 19.85 per cent after about half of polling stations had reported.

Wine’s confinement follows a tense election day marred by allegations of irregularities.

He had earlier raised concerns over what he described as widespread violations that threatened the credibility of the vote.
