England secured top spot in Group L of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Panama 2-0 in their final group-stage match at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Saturday.
After a frustrating first half, the Three Lions finally found their breakthrough in the second period thanks to star midfielder Jude Bellingham, who once again proved to be England’s difference-maker.
Panama defended resolutely during the opening 45 minutes, successfully keeping Thomas Tuchel’s side at bay. England struggled to create clear-cut chances, while Panama threatened occasionally on the counterattack.
However, England stepped up their performance after the break. Bellingham broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute, reacting quickest from a corner to stab the ball home and give his side a deserved lead.
Just five minutes later, the Real Madrid midfielder turned provider. Bellingham produced an excellent run down the left flank before delivering a perfect cross for captain Harry Kane, who headed home to double England’s advantage in the 67th minute.
Kane’s strike was historic as it saw the Bayern Munich forward surpass Gary Lineker to become England’s all-time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history with 11 tournament goals.
The victory ensured England finished top of Group L with seven points, ahead of Croatia, who also qualified for the knockout stage. Ghana progressed as one of the best third-placed teams, while Panama exited the tournament without registering a single goal during the group phase.
Despite topping the group, England manager Thomas Tuchel admitted his side still has room for improvement ahead of the knockout rounds. The Three Lions will now face DR Congo in the Round of 32 as they continue their quest for a first World Cup title since 1966.
England’s unbeaten group-stage campaign has boosted confidence among fans, with Bellingham and Kane once again demonstrating why they remain crucial to the nation’s hopes of lifting the trophy in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
