Atletico Madrid suffered a 2-1 defeat against Getafe on Sunday, which significantly impacted their La Liga title hopes.
Diego Simeone’s team, currently in second place, could have claimed the top spot with a victory since leaders Barcelona had their match postponed on Saturday. However, Atletico forward Angel Correa was sent off, and Getafe midfielder Mauro Arambarri scored two late goals to secure the win for the hosts.
Despite the upcoming Champions League last-16 second leg against Real Madrid on Wednesday, Simeone fielded a strong side. Getafe aimed to frustrate the visitors, leading to a first half where neither team created significant chances.
Giuliano Simeone, the coach’s son, was the most threatening player for Atletico as he probed down the right flank. Getafe came closest to scoring during the first half when Christantus Uche directed a header straight at Jan Oblak despite being well-placed.
Atletico midfielder Rodrigo de Paul sustained a knock in the first half and was substituted at halftime, keeping the Champions League match in mind. Simeone brought on Alexander Sorloth for Julian Alvarez, and it was the Norwegian who opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Omar Alderete handled the ball.
Atletico appeared to be in control with their lead until Angel Correa, another substitute, was sent off in the 87th minute for a high tackle on Djene Dakonam. Moments later, Getafe equalized through Arambarri, who collected a flicked-on free kick and scored.
With 10 minutes of stoppage time added and momentum on their side, Getafe pushed for a winner. Diego Rico’s long-range effort was cleverly redirected into the goal by Arambarri, who was just onside, securing all three points for his team.
