Barcelona cut the gap on La Liga’s top two with an entertaining 4-1 win over Sevilla on Sunday, despite playing out the final half-hour with 10 men after Fermin Lopez’s red card.
Lewandowski put Barcelona ahead in the seventh minute with his eighth goal in his last nine games in all competitions.
Ruben Vargas equalized a minute later for the hosts restoring hope into the match.
Araujo’s unfortunate evening was compounded by an injury sustained when fouled by Saul, with Pau Cubarsi replacing him in the 22nd minute.
Lopez put Barcelona back in front with just a minute into the second half.
Raphinha added to the lead in the 55th minute making it three for Barca.
Lopez was sent off for a high tackle but Barcelona held out and extended their lead when Garcia nodded home and sealed the win in the 89th minute.
“I am very happy with our performance. We played well and fought for the three points. I think we played well in the first half and Sevilla did too, of course. In the second half, we changed a few small things. We played with more rhythm, faster, and FermÃn’s 1-2 was very important for us. I am very proud of the team. After seeing the red card, we defended very well in a 4-4-1 formation,” the German evaluated.
Hansi Flick’s Barca climbed within two points of Real Madrid and moved one behind Atletico to crank up the tension in the title race.
