Businessman and Ismaili Muslims Imam Aga Khan IV Dies at 88

Spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims and businessman the Aga Khan has died aged 88.

The Aga Khan Development Network confirmed his death stating that he passed away peacefully surrounded by his family.

His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, was the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims.

“His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, passed away peacefully in Lisbon on 4 February 2025, aged 88, surrounded by his family.Prince Karim Aga Khan was the founder and chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network,” the Network announced

The late took over the reins from his grandfather back in July 1957 at the age of 20, building a network across 30 countries including African states.

He was also the founder and chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network.

The Aga Khan Health Services and the Aga Khan Education Services are among the leading agencies that have played a key role in the promotion of health and education in Kenya.

Moreover other establishments linked to Aga Khan include; Nation Media Group in Kenya, the Aga Khan University, the Aga Khan Hospitals, Diamond Trust Bank (DTB), Jubilee Insurance as well as the Aga Khan primary and secondary schools.

President William Ruto eulogised the late Imam as an extraordinary leader who went beyond what seemed impossible to help the vulnerable.

The late was born in Geneva on December 13, 1936, to Aly Khan and British-born Joan Yarde-Buller.
