Several people have reportedly sustained injuries after a Forward Sacco matatu overturned at Umoja Junction, near the Kangundo Road Fire Station.
According to reports, the matatu was ferrying passengers home when it overturned around 10pm, trapping some passengers under the wreckage.
In online footage seen by Whisperswire, the matatu appeared to be speeding along the highway moments before the accident, overtaking several vehicles.
Additionally, some passengers could be heard shouting while others were also seen hanging their hands outside the moving vehicle, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the journey before the crash.
Images shared online after the accident showed crowds gathering at the scene as rescuers intensified efforts to retrieve passengers trapped underneath the overturned vehicle.
Moments later, police officers arrived at the scene and arranged for the wreckage to be towed away, with investigations expected to be conducted to establish the cause of the accident.
Report to indicate that rescuers rushed the injured passengers to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital for medical attention, though the exact number of casualties had not been confirmed immediately.
