Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has handed over the leadership of the Jubilee Party to his deputy, Fred Matiang’i.
Speaking during a meeting with Jubilee officials in Nairobi on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, the former President said he would remain a Jubilee member and continue serving the party in a senior advisory capacity.
According to Uhuru, he had decided to allow Matiang’i to take over the party leadership ahead of the NDC, which is expected to formalise the transition.
“While we wait for NDC, I have decided to let my deputy take over the party leadership. I want to ask you respectfully to accept Fred Matiang’i to take the position of Jubilee party leader,” Uhuru stated.
Additionally, the former President said that he would remain a member of the Jubilee Party and serve as a senior adviser.
“I am still in Jubilee. I will be a senior member of the party and will be offering advisory services,” he added.
Matiang’i had been serving as one of Uhuru’s deputies in the party, alongside Jeremiah Kioni, before being asked to take over the leadership ahead of the National Delegates Convention.
This comes after the High Court ruling that upheld a law restricting retired presidents from holding political party office beyond six months after leaving State House.
