Two suspects have been arrested after police intercepted a vehicle ferrying 1.5 tonnes of uncustomed sugar in Busia County.
The suspects, identified as Abdi Ahmed, 31, and Said Mustafa, 24, were arrested by officers from Busia Police Station during a patrol in the Velasco area of Busia Township.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the officers flagged down a Toyota Probox, registration number KDJ 561V, which the suspects were allegedly using to transport the sugar.

A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 30 bags of sugar, each weighing 50 kilograms.
The DCI reported that the consignment was suspected to have been smuggled into Kenya through an ungazetted route along the Kenya-Uganda border.
The vehicle and the seized sugar were taken to Busia Police Station, where they were booked as exhibits.
The two suspects remain in police custody as they undergo processing before being arraigned in court.
The seizure comes amid intensified police patrols along the Kenya-Uganda border to curb smuggling and other economic crimes.
Authorities have been targeting routes allegedly used to bypass designated border crossings and evade applicable taxes.
