The National Youth Service (NYS) has raised concerns about fake cadet and private appointment letters currently circulating online.
This comes after NYS concluded a nationwide recruitment exercise that saw thousands of hopefuls turn up for cadet and private positions.
Interviews for the shortlisted candidates began on Tuesday, June 30, and stretched into phases throughout July due to overwhelming numbers.
According to the service, all successful candidates were reached individually via official email and SMS, never through unsolicited letters or unverified contacts.
However, that has not stopped fraudsters, who have been circulating a forged appointment letter bearing the NYS letterhead, logo, and official contact details.
The fake letter dated 1st June 2026, names a supposed appointee, Dorcas Nafula Wabwoba, under a fabricated reference number.
“Subject to your acceptance of the terms of this letter you are hereby appointed as NYS Private -Pay Group.1 in the Service, with effect from 1st June 2026,” the fake letter stated in part.
The forged document also lists a house allowance of Ksh6,000 and an annual leave allowance of Ksh3,000, fabricated and designed to appear genuine.
Interestingly, victims are then instructed to report to the NYS Paramilitary Training School in Gilgil before 5 p.m. on 29th July, carrying a briefcase and an electric iron box.
The letter even carries a forged signature attributed to the Director of Human Resource Management and Development (HRM&D), Henry Obanyi, purportedly written on behalf his behalf to appear genuine.
So far, the service has distanced itself from the fake letter, clarifying that fraudsters are becoming more sophisticated, urging Kenyans to stay alert to anyone claiming to represent the Service outside verified channels.
