Nairobi Lawyer Nabbed in Alleged Forgery Scheme to Claim Land

A Nairobi-based lawyer has been apprehended over allegations of using forged documentation in a land fraud case after investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations’ Land Fraud Investigations Unit (LFIU).

In a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investiagations (DCI) , the suspect was apprehended in Nairobi’s Central Business District on July 21 following investigations into a dispute over ownership of a parcel of land.

“Detectives from the DCI Headquarters’ Land Fraud Investigations Unit (LFIU) have apprehended a lawyer based in Nairobi, for his involvement in a land fraud scheme to deprive a rightful owner of her property,” DCI stated.

According to the authority, the case stems from a complaint lodged by a woman who bought the land in 2005, occupying the property for years without dispute.

The complainant later received court documents in November 2023 indicating that the lawyer was claiming ownership of the land.

This prompted detectives to launch investigations into the matter after receiving the complaint and examined the documents presented in support of the ownership claim.

The findings were forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for review, where prosecutors approved charges of making a false document and uttering a forged document.

The suspect was subsequently tracked down and arrested as detectives moved to execute the recommendations arising from the investigations.

The suspect is currently in police custody undergoing processing ahead of his arraignment in court.
