The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has told the High Court that Albert Ojwang was tortured and killed while in police custody.
According to the DPP, he alleged that a crucial CCTV footage from Nairobi Central Police Station was deleted in an attempt to conceal evidence.
Addressing the court on Monday, July 20, 2025, DPP Renson Ingonga said investigations indicate that Ojwang’s death was the result of a planned assault while in police custody, contradicting earlier claims that he died after hitting his head against a wall.

According to reports by the prosecition, Ojwang was assaulted with a blunt object before being strangled to death while detained at Nairobi Central Police Station.
Ingonga further told the court that medical evidence will show Ojwang sustained blunt force head injuries, neck compression and multiple injuries across his body, findings that the prosecution says are inconsistent with the initial police account of how he died.
Additionally, the prosecution argued that the deleted footage was of significant interest because it could have helped establish what transpired while Ojwang was in police custody and who was present during the period leading to his death.
Reports indicate that the technician testified that upon arriving at the OCS office, he found the DVR disconnected and not functioning.
He further told the court that the recording device had already been formatted, making it impossible to recover the footage investigators were seeking.
