Ruto Defends Frequent Countrywide Tours Amid Growing Criticism

President William Ruto has defended his frequent tours across the country, saying the visits are part of his responsibility as head of state and are aimed at engaging Kenyans and addressing their concerns firsthand.

Speaking in Meru on Sunday, June 28, Ruto dismissed criticism over his extensive travel, maintaining that he will continue visiting every part of the country to understand the challenges facing citizens and oversee the implementation of government programmes.

The president said his administration is taking a different approach by ensuring no region is left behind, arguing that previous administrations concentrated development and presidential visits in selected areas.

He maintained that he would continue traversing the country without seeking anyone’s approval.

Ruto said his tours provide an opportunity to inspect ongoing development projects, assess government programmes and gather direct feedback from wananchi, which he said helps shape policy decisions and improve service delivery across the country.

He also maintained that his engagements are intended to promote inclusivity by ensuring every region receives attention from the national government, regardless of political affiliation or voting patterns.

His remarks come amid an escalating public dispute with Standard Media Group, which has repeatedly criticised his leadership and questioned the cost and value of his numerous domestic tours.

The fallout intensified after Ruto accused the media house of using its platforms to undermine his administration, claims the Standard rejected.

The media organisation maintained that its editorial coverage is guided by its role in holding the government accountable and pledged to continue scrutinising the administration’s performance.
