Croatia secured qualification for the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after battling to a hard fought 2-1 victory over Ghana in their final Group L match on Saturday.
The result saw Zlatko Dalic’s side finish second in the group behind England, while Ghana’s fate depended on results elsewhere after suffering their first defeat of the group stage.
Croatia controlled possession for long periods and were rewarded in the 31st minute when midfielder Petar Sučić broke the deadlock with a superb strike from outside the penalty area after being picked out by Mateo Kovačić. The goal gave Croatia a deserved halftime lead following sustained pressure against a disciplined Ghanaian defence.

Knowing that a positive result would boost their qualification hopes, Ghana gradually became more adventurous after the interval. Their persistence paid off in the 73rd minute when Derrick Luckassen found the back of the net. The goal was initially delayed by a lengthy VAR review before being confirmed, bringing the Black Stars level and setting up a tense finale.
Croatia, however, responded with the composure expected from one of Europe’s most experienced international sides. Veteran captain Luka Modrić once again dictated the tempo in midfield before delivering the decisive contribution in the 83rd minute. His perfectly delivered ball found Nikola Vlašić, who headed home to restore Croatia’s advantage and ultimately secure all three points.
The closing minutes saw Ghana push numbers forward in search of another equaliser, but Croatia defended resolutely to preserve the victory and seal progression to the knockout stage.
The win marked an important response for Croatia after an inconsistent group campaign. Their experience, midfield control and ability to capitalize on key moments proved decisive against a determined Ghanaian side that refused to surrender.
Croatia now advance to the Round of 32 as Group L runners-up, while Ghana remained in contention for qualification as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams depending on results from the remaining groups.
