Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has opposed President William Ruto’s reported plan to construct a State Lodge in Meru County, arguing that the development is unnecessary given the proximity of the Sagana State Lodge in Nyeri County, which he says can adequately serve the region.
Gachagua raised environmental concerns, warning that the proposed project could involve the encroachment of about 200 acres of the Imenti Forest, a key water catchment area that supports numerous springs and rivers in Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties.
He cautioned that any destruction of the forest ecosystem could have severe consequences for local communities that depend on these water sources.

“We are calling upon President William Ruto that for the 14 months that are remaining, he does not a State Lodge in Meru. We have a state lodge in Sagana, which is about 20 minutes by flight to Meru. He can serve the people of Meru from the Sagana State Lodge,” Gachagua noted.
His remarks come amid growing criticism from environmental groups, including the Green Belt Movement, which has raised alarm over reports linking the proposed State Lodge, alongside plans for a golf course and airstrip, to sections of the forest.
The organization has expressed concern that the developments may be tied to a road infrastructure project under the Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project, which includes a Special User Licence for part of the Meru Bypass.
The group has called for transparency, suspension of any related approvals, and stronger protection of Imenti Forest, urging environmental agencies, oversight bodies, and the public to prevent possible encroachment on the protected ecosystem.
