West Ham  have officially been relegated from the Premier League after 14 consecutive seasons in the English top flight despite securing a 3-0 victory against Leeds United on the final day of the season.

The London club needed both a win against Leeds and a defeat for Tottenham Hotspur  against Everton to survive relegation on Sunday evening.

West Ham managed to do their part at the London Stadium after goals from Taty Castellanos, Jarrod Bowen and Callum Wilson secured an important victory in front of emotional home supporters.

However, their hopes of surviving in the premier league were crushed after Tottenham Hotspur secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to remain in the top division.

The decisive goal for Tottenham came in the first half through Joao Palhinha whose effort helped Spurs finish two points above West Ham in the final premier league standings.

West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen expressed disappointment after the club’s relegation saying the players had failed to maintain consistency throughout the season despite winning on the final day.

“It hurts. We did enough today but throughout the season we have not been good enough,” Bowen said.

The relegation marks the end of West Ham’s 14 year stay in the premier league after returning to the top flight in 2012. During that period, the club enjoyed memorable moments including winning the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2023 and competing in European football competitions.

Football analysts have linked West Ham’s struggles this season to inconsistent performances, managerial instability and poor results against teams around them in the relegation battle.

The club also experienced pressure throughout the campaign after changing managers and struggling to maintain form during crucial matches in the second half of the season.

Meanwhile Tottenham supporters celebrated survival after what had been one of the club’s most difficult premier league seasons in recent years under head coach Roberto De Zerbi.

West Ham fans were seen emotional after the final whistle with many supporters remaining inside the London Stadium as players applauded them following confirmation of relegation to the Championship next season.

The Hammers will now shift focus towards rebuilding the squad ahead of next season as they prepare for life in the Championship while Tottenham remain in the premier league for another season.
