11 Injured After Collapse at Rumos Hills Gold Mine

At least 11 people have been injured following a rockfall incident at a gold mining site at Rumos Hills in West Pokot County.

In a statement issued on Thursday, May 7, Kenya Red Cross noted that the incident occurred while community members were engaged in mining activities at the site.

The organization noted that rescue efforts were ongoing at the scene as emergency teams worked to establish whether more people were trapped beneath the collapsed section of the mine.

According to the Red Cross, sounds were still being heard from underneath the debris, raising fears that additional victims could still be trapped underground.

The incident has prompted a major rescue operation involving emergency responders and local residents as efforts continue to reach those feared trapped at the mining site.

Kenya Red Cross moreover disclosed that the incident left 11 people injured, with three victims reported to be in critical condition.

The three critically injured individuals were rushed to Kapenguria Referral Hospital for specialised treatment as rescue efforts continued at the scene.

The Red Cross further noted that first responders remained on site, working closely with local authorities and members of the community to support ongoing emergency operations.

The latest incident comes months after five female artisanal miners lost their lives following the collapse of a mining shaft in North Ramba, Rarieda, Siaya County.

Following the tragedy, rescue operations involving police officers and local residents were immediately launched, but all five victims were later confirmed dead at the scene. 

The victim was later confirmed dead and many described the incident as a painful tragedy for the community.
