Matiang’i Blasts Government, Demands Respect for Uhuru Kenyatta

Jubilee Party presidential hopeful Fred Matiang’i has criticised the government and leaders within the Kenya Kwanza coalition over what he described as sustained attacks on retired President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Speaking during a press conference on Monday, May 4, Matiang’i questioned the government’s reaction to a phone call made by Uhuru to Jubilee supporters, terming the response excessive.

He maintained that Uhuru was acting within his constitutional rights to address party members, particularly in his capacity as a Jubilee Party leader.

Matiang’i went on to defend the former Head of State, asserting that he will continue engaging with supporters despite criticism from government officials.

The former CS moreover called on political leaders to uphold civility in public discourse and show respect to the former president, warning against what he described as a growing culture of intolerance.

Matiang’i also took aim at the ruling party, describing it as unstable and pointing to recent political developments, including signals from Irungu Kang’ata about his future within the party.

He argued that internal shifts within the ruling outfit should concern those in government, suggesting that such developments reflect deeper issues within the party.

The former Interior CS further urged Kenyans to take note of the ongoing political tensions as they evaluate leadership ahead of the 2027 elections, while also criticising President William Ruto over his leadership and conduct on the regional stage.
