Kisumu: Court Grants Police 14 Days to Detain Firearm Suspects

Two suspects who were apprehended with an illegal firearm along the Kisumu–Busia Highway have been arraigned in court.

In an update issued by the Directorate of Criminal Investiagations (DCI) on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, the police revealed Evans Otieno Ongere and Abel Onyango Owuor — who were arrested after officers recovered a Phantom pistol — were presented before the Principal Magistrate’s Court in Vihiga.

During the court procession, detectives obtained a 14-day custodial order.

According to reports by the police, the firearm was submitted to the National Forensic Laboratory for ballistic analysis.

“Two suspects, Evans Otieno Ongere and Abel Onyango Owuor, arrested in possession of a Phantom pistol along the Kisumu-Busia Highway, were presented before the Principal Magistrate’s Court in Vihiga, where detectives secured a 14-day custodial order. The recovered firearm is now at the National Forensic Lab for ballistic analysis”, part of the statement read.

At the same time, DCI revealed that a suspect identified as Christopher Okello, who was rescued from a mob after he was found in possession of a bow and arrow, was also arraigned and pleaded not guilty.

He was released on a bond of Ksh100,000, with the matter set for mention on May 14, 2026.

However, the police disclosed that investigations are ongoing and urged the public to verify information, dismissing online claims of police inaction as misleading.
