Activist Mwabili Mwagodi has been released following a standoff at the Deputy County Commissioner’s office in Githunguri, Kiambu County.
According to reports, Mwagodi was in the area to document and report on the historical and cultural significance of the Githunguri Kia Wairera, where an Affordable Housing Project is under construction.
However, he was confronted by an unidentified individuals while attempting to record his story.
According to the activist, the stopped him from recording and took him to the DCC office, where they confiscated his microphone and attempted to seize his phone and a camera stand, which was damaged during the altercation.
“I have been attacked by unknown people in Githunguri town. They have locked me up in the DCC office,” he wrote.
Further reports indicate that his detainers called Githunguri Assistant Police Commandant Chief Inspector Jonathan Koech, who intervened and ordered Mwagodi’s release and the return of his belongings.
Following the intervention, Mwagodi confirmed he was safe and said Koech instructed him to notify the Githunguri police station commander if he intended to record publicly in the area again.
“I am safe. Githunguri AP Commandant Chief Inspector Koech intervened at the DCC office, where the goons had detained me and confiscated my microphone. I am on my way out of Githunguri,” he added.
Mwagodi also said he was on a video call with his lawyer during the standoff, which prevented him from capturing the attackers on camera.
