Suspect Arrested Over Series of Transformer Vandalism Cases

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), in collaboration with the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), has arrested a suspect linked to a series of transformer vandalism incidents in Shianda, Kakamega County, bringing relief to residents affected by prolonged power disruptions.

The suspect, identified as Alfred Hassan Bushuru, is alleged to have been involved in a wave of attacks targeting electrical infrastructure across Malava and its surroundings.

According to investigators, Bushuru evaded arrest following an intelligence-led operation conducted on August 2, 2024, when detectives raided his homestead in Shianda village.

Although he escaped at the time, officers recovered assorted electrical equipment, a dismantled transformer, copper windings, and containers of transformer oil, indicating involvement in illegal dismantling of power infrastructure.

Following sustained investigations, detectives eventually arrested the suspect and conducted a further search at his residence.

Additional items recovered included KPLC meter cards, multiple SIM cards, a filled electricity application form, and several job cards from various institutions bearing his name.

DCI reports indicate that the evidence points to a well-organized operation rather than isolated theft incidents.

The suspect is believed to have played a significant role in vandalism activities that have disrupted electricity supply and affected livelihoods in the region.

Bushuru is currently being held at Kabras Police Station pending processing and arraignment in court.
