CS Murkomen Shares Latest on Nairobi Metro Police Unit Rollout

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has provided an update on the progress toward establishing the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit.

In a statement issued on Friday, April 10, Murkomen said he had already engaged the team tasked with driving the initiative, emphasizing the government’s commitment to meeting the set deadline.

He noted that the formation of the unit follows a directive from President William Ruto and is anchored in a cooperation framework between the National Government and the Nairobi City County Government.

Murkomen added that he had convened a meeting with the technical committee overseeing the process to review the implementation progress.

The CS explained that the proposed unit is intended to respond to the unique security challenges of a rapidly growing urban center like Nairobi, where increasing population pressure continues to stretch existing policing systems.

The development comes a week after Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja launched the Administration Police Service Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit for the Del Monte sector.

In a statement issued on Thursday, April 3, the National Police Service said the unit was created following concerns raised during the Jukwaa la Usalama forum in Kiambu, where stakeholders called for more coordinated, responsive, and community-focused security measures.

According to the NPS, the deployment is intended to provide an intelligence-led approach to protecting key investments, employees, and surrounding communities, while also enhancing surveillance, strengthening rapid response, and maintaining a consistent law enforcement presence in the area.

Deputy Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli, who attended the launch, underscored the importance of securing major investments through well-coordinated and robust policing strategies.

Masengeli noted that protecting the investment would also safeguard the livelihoods tied to its operations.

Del Monte Kenya Managing Director Wayne Cook welcomed the partnership with the National Police Service, saying it is grounded in responsible, community-focused policing aimed at protecting both the company and nearby communities.
