Social Health Authority Expands Coverage to Police and Prison Services

The Social Health Authority (SHA) is set to roll out medical cover for officers in the National Police Service (NPS) and the Kenya Prison Service (KPS) effective April 1, 2026.

In a notice issued on March 30, the authority confirmed that the new cover will extend to police officers, prison staff, and their eligible dependents under the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund (POMSF).

SHA indicated that the transition will take effect at midnight on April 1, with the current medical cover remaining valid until 11:59pm on March 31, 2026.

The move is aimed at ensuring a seamless shift to the new system without disrupting access to healthcare services.

The Social Health Authority (SHA) said it is working with healthcare providers and relevant institutions to ensure a smooth transition with no disruption in access to care.

The move follows a February 26 directive by President William Ruto aimed at advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) under the Kenya Kwanza agenda, with about 30 million Kenyans already registered under SHA.

Officers have been urged to update their dependents’ details to enable seamless access to services.

SHA assured that patients already admitted will continue receiving treatment without interruption from April 1, 2026.

The authority added that arrangements will be made to transfer patients from non-contracted facilities where necessary.

It has also set up liaison officers in all counties and a hotline (0800 720 601) to handle enquiries and support coordination.
