Omanga Opens Up on Fallout With President Ruto

Millicent Omanga has disclosed that her fallout with President William Ruto stems from what she termed as unfulfilled promises and a sense of betrayal.

Speaking during an interview, the former nominated senator alleged that the President failed to implement key commitments made to women ahead of the 2022 General Election.

Omanga pointed to a women’s charter that Ruto endorsed, which included a pledge to ensure a 50:50 gender balance in government appointments, an assurance she claims has not been realised.

She also cited other promises that remain unmet, such as the distribution of free sanitary towels to girls in public schools and the provision of free diapers for women giving birth in public hospitals.

According to Omanga, these pledges were central to the campaign’s outreach to women but have yet to translate into tangible action since the government took office.

Millicent Omanga also revealed that she turned down an appointment to the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Commission board, arguing that the role conflicted with her values.

She explained that after reviewing the commission’s mandate which includes demolitions of structures and markets along riverbanks she felt it would negatively affect a significant portion of her supporters, many of whom live in those areas, and chose not to take up the position.

The development comes just days after she formally joined the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Omanga was welcomed into the party by Gachagua during an event held at the party headquarters on Thursday, March 19, where he described her as a principled leader committed to the welfare of Nairobi residents.

In her remarks, Omanga issued an apology to Nairobi residents for backing William Ruto, accusing him of failing to deliver on promises made to the electorate.
