Kenya Introduces New Compliance Framework for Mobile Phone Vendors and Users

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has unveiled new technical specifications to guide the sale and use of type-approved mobile phones in Kenya.

In a notice dated Tuesday, March 24, 2026, CAK revealed that it has updated its mobile devices standards requiring individuals, companies, or organisations intending to market, sell, or use communication equipment to comply.

According to the authority, only duly licensed vendors may sell communication equipment that meets safety standards.

“Thinking of buying or importing a phone? CA has released new technical specifications for mobile cellular devices to ensure safer devices, better network performance, safety from harmful radiation, and a better user experience,” the regulator stated.

“It is notified for the general public, ICT equipment vendors, local mobile phone assemblers and mobile phone manufacturers that the Authority has developed technical specifications for use during the type approval process for mobile cellular devices,” CA added.

With the new regulation, the regulator has warned that selling mobile phones and other ICT devices without proper authorisation could result in legal action, fines and confiscation of such equipment.

According to CA, the move sought to protect consumers from substandard, counterfeit, or potentially harmful devices that may interfere with communication networks or compromise user safety.

It therefore advised mobile phone users to buy phones and accessories only from licensed dealers to avoid acquiring unlawful or uncertified devices that may be blocked from accessing local networks.

The authority encouraged businesses to familiarise themselves with the new type approval requirements and submit the necessary documentation before importing or distributing the mobile devices.
