KMPDU Breaks Silence After Arrest of 83-Year-Old Doctor

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has raised concern following the arrest of 83-year-old obstetrician and gynecologist Job Obwaka.

In a statement, KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah said Obwaka was arrested on the morning of Saturday, March 14, at his parking bay at the NSSF Building under circumstances that remain unclear.

According to Atellah, the veteran doctor was later taken to Muthaiga Police Station, where he is currently being held.

The union noted that Obwaka is a long-serving and respected medical practitioner who has dedicated many years to caring for mothers, families, and patients across the country.

His arrest has raised concern among doctors, members of the Kenya Hospital Association, staff at The Nairobi Hospital, and the broader medical community.

KMPDU further stated that Obwaka is facing allegations of falsifying the register of members, an issue the union says falls under the responsibility and custodianship of the Office of the Company Secretary.

He further argued that the 83-year-old obstetrician was not present at the time the alleged irregularities are said to have occurred.

Atellah also expressed concern over reports that authorities had declined to grant the veteran doctor cash bail, even though the alleged offence is legally bailable.

The union urged authorities to ensure that Obwaka is treated with dignity, fairness, and full respect for his constitutional rights.

KMPDU also called on relevant authorities to immediately clarify the circumstances surrounding the doctor’s arrest and continued detention.

In addition, the union demanded that due legal process be followed, including the granting of bail in accordance with Kenyan law.

The doctors’ union further urged investigative agencies to ensure that the pursuit of justice is conducted without intimidation, harassment, or undue influence.
