Delegates of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) have re-elected veteran trade unionist Francis Atwoli for another term.
The elections took place on Saturday morning, March 14, at the Tom Mboya Labour College, where Atwoli was confirmed unopposed to serve his sixth term as COTU Secretary-General.
At 76 years old, Atwoli is expected to continue leading the federation for the next five years. He has been at the helm of COTU since 2001, following the tenure of the late Joseph Mugalla.

Prior to his election, Francis Atwoli served as General Secretary of the Kenya Plantation and Agricultural Workers Union and held senior leadership roles in the Union of Posts and Telecommunication Employees.
Over the years, he has also occupied various positions within government bodies and international non-governmental organizations, contributing to labor advocacy at both national and global levels.
Atwoli’s extensive experience and long-standing commitment to defending workers’ rights have cemented his position as one of Kenya’s most influential labour leaders.
His advocacy has earned him recognition both nationally and internationally, making him a central figure in the country’s trade union movement.
Despite his accomplishments, Atwoli has faced criticism from some workers who accuse him of prioritising political interests over union grievances.
He had previously announced plans to step down from COTU once William Ruto’s tenure ends, although he has not confirmed whether his departure will coincide with the 2031 COTU elections.
