The Ministry of Health (MoH) has issued an urgent public advisory warning of increased risks of building and infrastructure collapses during the ongoing March‑April‑May (MAM) long rains.
Health PS Mary Muthoni said on Friday that prolonged rainfall can weaken foundations, damage roads and bridges, and compromise building integrity, posing serious threats to life and public safety.
The government has also advised caution around buildings showing signs of structural weakness, including cracks, flooding, or compromised walls, and recommended avoiding such structures until they are deemed safe.

The Ministry has also urged landlords and property owners to inspect their buildings and carry out timely repairs to reinforce vulnerable structures.
Property developers have been cautioned against constructing new buildings on unstable slopes, flood-prone areas, or riparian zones, which are particularly at risk of landslides and structural damage during heavy rains, increasing the likelihood of collapses.
The ministry further advised residents to report any structural hazards or damaged infrastructure immediately, enabling disaster response teams to take preventive action.
In the event of a building or infrastructure collapse, the public is instructed to move away quickly to avoid falling debris or secondary collapses.
The warning comes amid a rise in building-related incidents, with several fatalities reported in Nairobi.
