Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa has announced the death of his mother, Lucia Wangui Thang’wa, popularly known as Nyina wa Martin.
In a tribute shared on Thursday, March 5, the senator reflected on the challenges his mother faced in her later years, noting that she had battled dementia for many years.
Despite the illness, Thang’wa said she remained a source of strength to him whenever he visited or spent time with her.
He also remembered her as the matriarch of the family who, together with their late father, raised thirteen children with love, sacrifice, and discipline.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has mourned Lucia Wangui Thang’wa, describing her as a devoted and hardworking mother who played a central role in raising a family that has gone on to contribute significantly in various fields.
In his message of condolence, Gachagua noted that Lucia, together with her late husband Stephen Kimani Thang’wa, a primary school teacher, raised thirteen children while instilling in them strong values and discipline.
He also highlighted the accomplishments of some of her children, including Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa, Catholic priest Fr. Michael Thang’wa, humanitarian Kihara wa Thang’wa, and nurses Wambui Thang’wa and Wanjiru Thang’wa, noting that they continue to make meaningful contributions to society.
Rigathi Gachagua further revealed that Lucia Wangui Thang’wa passed away at the age of 93 after developing breathing complications.
He noted that she spent her final moments surrounded by family, including her son, Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa, as well as her caregivers.
Gachagua also extended his condolences to the Thang’wa family, relatives, and friends, expressing sympathy as they mourn the loss of their loved one.
