Ex-Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu Released on KSh20M Bail

Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has been freed from jail after the High Court reviewed his bail terms.

Through his lawyer, Jeremy Njenga, Ferdinand Waititu revealed that he was a free man on Thursday March 5, 2026 when the matter came up for mention before the High Court Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Division.

Reports indicate that he was referring to earlier directives that reviewed Waititu’s bond terms and paved the way for his release from Kamiti Maximum Prison.

Waititu had been serving his sentence after he was convicted on February 2025 in connection with the irregular award of a Sh588 million road tender in Kiambu County.

The ex-governor had earlier been granted a reprieve after allowing an application seeking review of the bail terms pending appeal.

In the court ruling, the bail requirement was reduced which allowed him to be released as he pursues his appeal against conviction and sentence.

The judge therefore set the bail to KSh20 million cash, a revision from the earlier requirement of a KSh53 million bond with a bank guarantee, terms that had kept the former governor in custody.

The court further indicated that Waititu’s case will be mentioned again in April 14, 2026.
