KMTC Addresses Fatal Shooting of Student Linked to Mathari Campus

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has issued a statement following the fatal shooting of student Sheryl Adhiambo, who was linked to its Mathari Campus.

In a show of solidarity, KMTC CEO Kelly Oluoch visited the campus on Tuesday, February 10, where he met with students, faculty, and staff at a sombre gathering.

The visit aimed to support the grieving college community and address concerns with student leaders and staff.

The atmosphere at the campus was one of deep sadness as students and faculty came together to mourn the loss of the first-year student, who was remembered for her vibrant spirit and promise.

On behalf of the institution, Oluoch extended condolences to Sheryl’s family, friends, and all those who knew her, and reiterated the college’s commitment to providing psychosocial support during this difficult time.

Oluoch noted that the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under ongoing official investigations.

He added that the college has already engaged relevant independent oversight institutions and will continue to cooperate fully with the authorities.

He also reaffirmed KMTC’s commitment to supporting the Mathari Campus community, including enhancing student welfare programmes and strengthening counselling and psychosocial support services.

The update comes two days after the National Police Service (NPS) issued a statement on the fatal shooting of Sheryl Adhiambo.

In a statement released on Sunday, February 8, the NPS detailed the events that led to the incident and the measures being taken to ensure accountability.

Police said the situation began on Saturday morning, February 7, after a robbery report was made at Huruma Police Station, prompting arrests later in the day.

Tensions reportedly escalated during the second arrest when a suspect allegedly incited nearby youths, leading to stone-throwing and officers firing warning shots.

Shortly afterward, authorities received reports that a member of the public had been fatally injured.

The NPS confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) already involved, and urged the public to remain calm as the process continues.
