Relatives Held After 19-Year-Old Dies in Alleged Punishment Incident

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Turbo have arrested an uncle and aunt accused of fatally punishing their 19-year-old nephew, Kevin Kipkorir Meli.

In a statement issued by the DCI, the chilling incident was reported on February 2, 2026, in Kiplombe Location, Turbo Sub-County.

The tragedy came to light after officers at Baharini Police Station received an urgent call alerting them to a suspected murder at Kaplelach village.

Police rushed to the area and were met with a disturbing scene. Kevin’s body was found lying under an avocado tree within his uncle’s compound.

The discovery marked the beginning of investigations into what authorities describe as a harrowing case of violence within a family setting.

Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers meticulously documented the scene, where the 19-year-old’s body was found bearing multiple injuries on the head, back, legs, and hands, with blood clots visible in his nose.

His remains were later transported to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) morgue for preservation and autopsy.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Kevin was allegedly suspected of stealing and selling dry maize from his uncle’s home, a claim that is believed to have triggered the deadly incident.

Authorities allege that Phillip Kosgei and Tecla Chepchirchir tied the young man to an avocado tree using a manila rope before beating him with canes until he lost consciousness and died.

Detectives were able to recover the rope and broken sticks as exhibits.

The suspects remain in custody awaiting arraignment.
