2 More Kenyans Killed Fighting in Russia-Ukraine War

Two more Kenyans have been reported killed while on the frontline of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence (DIU) revealed on Thursday, February 6, that the deceased were Ombwori Denis Bagaka and Wahome Simon Gititu.

The agency stated that the two, who had been recruited by Russia, were found dead near the city of Lyman in Ukraine’s Donetsk region.

Their bodies were reportedly discovered alongside the remains of another Kenyan, Clinton Nyapara Mogesa, in the same area.

The three Kenyans were reportedly working as security guards in Qatar before being recruited by Russia.

Ombwori Denis Bagaka and Clinton Nyapara Mogesa arrived at a recruitment centre in Yaroslavl in September 2025, with Wahome Simon Gititu joining in October.

They were allegedly signed up by a Kyrgyz agent who also took control of their bank accounts.

The recruits were later sent to a training camp near Voronezh and placed in a “penal battalion” used for high-risk missions.

After brief training, they were deployed to Donbas to storm the city of Lyman, where they were reportedly killed by Ukrainian forces.

The DIU noted that the assault on Lyman turned out to be the final mission for the three Kenyans, claiming Russian commanders made no effort to support or evacuate them from the battlefield.

Although there is no officially verified total from Kenyan authorities or independent monitors, reports indicate that at least five Kenyans have so far been confirmed killed while fighting in the conflict after being recruited.
