ODPP Sanctions Murder Charges Against Two Officers Over Mukuru Shooting

The Director of Public Prosecutions has approved murder charges against two police officers linked to the fatal shooting of Shukri Ibrahim Adan in Nairobi’s Mukuru area.

In an update issued on Thursday, January 29, the Mukuru Community Justice Centre confirmed that the ODPP had sanctioned murder charges against officers Godwin Mjomba and Patrick Mutunga.

The plea-taking session was, however, deferred due to the absence of a High Court judge.

The matter is now scheduled to proceed on Friday, January 30, through a virtual court session.

The group emphasized their commitment to ensuring justice is served in the case, stating, “Justice for Shukri must not be delayed; we remain vigilant.”

The two officers, Sergeant Godwin Mjomba and Administration Police Constable Patrick Mutunga Titus, have been in custody since their arrest over the fatal shooting of Shukri Ibrahim Adan on January 11 in Nairobi’s Mukuru area.

A Milimani Law Courts judge granted investigators 14 days to complete inquiries, citing the officers’ positions as a risk to witnesses and the investigation.

Authorities said the case has attracted significant public attention, triggering protests and safety concerns.

Preliminary findings by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority indicate that Shukri was shot in the head while lying on the ground after being ordered to surrender.

A post-mortem confirmed he died from a single gunshot wound to the head.
