Senator Cherargei Rules Out Winnie Odinga for ODM Leadership

Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei has recently noted that Winnie Odinga is not fit to take over leadership of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

In comments on Wednesday, January 28, Cherargei questioned Winnie’s record of achievement, pointing to her tenure at the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) and noting a lack of notable accomplishments.

He added that her main qualification for leading ODM appeared to be her connection as the daughter of the party’s founder and former Prime Minister, the late Raila Odinga.

Winnie Odinga has been part of a group of ODM members questioning the party’s direction ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly regarding potential cooperation with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

In a recent interview, she expressed concerns over the leadership transition following the death of her father, noting that her uncle, Senator Oburu Odinga, assumed the party leadership.

She called for a National Delegates Convention to formally elect new leadership, arguing that current officeholders were acting without proper ratification by the party’s structures.

Despite the disputes, she emphasized that there is no bad blood between her and Senator Oburu Odinga, stressing that the family remains united.

She also reiterated her position that ODM can stand independently, appreciating President Ruto’s support to the family while maintaining that agreement with someone does not require complete alignment on political matters.
