Uganda Lifts Internet Restrictions After Museveni Declared Winner

Uganda has restored public internet access following the conclusion of the 2026 General Elections, in which President Yoweri Museveni was declared the winner.

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) said the decision came after the elections ended and a full security assessment was completed.

The temporary internet shutdown had been implemented during the electoral period to prevent the spread of misinformation and interference, while ensuring that essential services remained operational.

As internet connectivity is restored, the UCC emphasized that usage should be responsible and aligned with the national interest.

The agency also recognized the cooperation of stakeholders during the period of restrictions, highlighting the role of the public, service providers, and the media in maintaining order and compliance.

This comes hours after President Ruto congratulated Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni following his re-election in Uganda’s 2026 presidential election.

Ruto praised the peaceful conduct of the polls and commended both citizens and electoral stakeholders for demonstrating democratic maturity.

He described Museveni’s victory as a reflection of the trust Ugandans have in his leadership and in the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), noting that the outcome is likely to strengthen efforts to advance the country’s development agenda.

Ruto also reaffirmed the close ties between Kenya and Uganda, emphasizing his government’s commitment to continued collaboration with Museveni’s administration on initiatives for regional and continental progress.
