Police Address Surge in Road Traffic Accidents

The National Police Service (NPS) has expressed deep concern over a sharp rise in road traffic accidents across the country at the start of 2026.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, January 7, police revealed that at least 31 people have lost their lives within the first six days of the new year due to road crashes.

The service warned that the surge in accidents has resulted in devastating injuries, loss of property, and immense suffering for affected families.

NPS described the situation as alarming and unacceptable, stressing that the crisis requires urgent, collective, and decisive action to prevent further loss of life and destruction.

The National Police Service said preliminary investigations indicate that most of the recent accidents were caused by avoidable mistakes by road users.

According to the police, early findings point to preventable human errors such as reckless driving, overspeeding, driver fatigue, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The statement further highlighted persistent violations by boda boda riders, including riding against traffic and using pedestrian walkways, as key contributors to the crashes.

NPS emphasized that these dangerous practices are entirely avoidable and urged all road users to exercise greater responsibility to help curb the rising number of accidents.

Police said officers have remained on the roads throughout the festive season in collaboration with other agencies to enforce traffic laws.

However, following the recent surge in accidents, the Inspector General has ordered an immediate nationwide crackdown.

NPS announced that traffic commanders at all levels have been directed to intensify high-visibility operations targeting speeding, drunk driving, unroadworthy vehicles, and non-compliant public service vehicles. Breathalyzer tests will also be stepped up, with courts ready to handle offenders.

The police urged all road users to prioritize safety, calling on public transport operators and boda boda groups to strengthen internal discipline and compliance.
