Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has shed light on the planning and financing of his presidential campaign ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Matiang’i, who is among the principals in the United Opposition seeking to unseat President William Ruto, said his campaign is largely supported by well-wishers and loyal supporters.
He explained that he does not possess vast personal wealth to independently bankroll a presidential bid, noting that his background is not in business or commercial ventures.

Matiang’i emphasized that his campaign is not funded through proceeds from gold trade, insurance brokerage, or government supply contracts, but rather through contributions from supporters who believe in his leadership.
According to him, friends from the teaching fraternity have played a key role in supporting his bid, while a significant portion of his campaign team is working on a voluntary basis.
Matiang’i revealed that many of those involved in advancing his campaign are not on the payroll, with volunteers making up the majority of his support structure.
He noted that contributions to his campaign come in small amounts from committed supporters and well-wishers.
Matiang’i went on to note that Kenyan voters are increasingly shifting toward issue-based politics rather than ethnic considerations, a trend he believes will work in his favour.
He said his campaign is anchored on this growing constituency of citizens who are willing to sacrifice time and resources to support leadership focused on national interests.
