Karugu’s Children Arraigned Over Alleged Fraudulent Share Deal

The children of former Attorney General James Karugu have been arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts on charges of conspiracy to defraud, forgery, and giving false information in connection with an alleged scheme to illegally transfer company shares.

Jane Wangechi Kabiu, Eric Mwaura Karugu, and Benjamin Githara Karugu appeared in court on Tuesday to answer multiple charges linked to the disputed transfer of shares owned by Victoria Nyambura Karugu.

Prosecutors told the court that on or about May 2, 2012, the three siblings allegedly conspired to defraud Victoria Nyambura Karugu by transferring an ordinary share from Madara Holdings Limited to Centarion Holdings Limited.

Jane Wangechi Kabiu was separately charged with forgery and uttering a false document, with the prosecution alleging that she forged a share transfer form in 2012 purporting it to be a genuine document belonging to Victoria Nyambura Karugu.

She was also accused of knowingly and fraudulently presenting the forged document to the Director General of the Business Registration Service.

Eric Mwaura Karugu and Benjamin Githara Karugu were separately charged with giving false information to a public officer.

According to the charge sheet, on February 5, 2025, at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters in Nairobi, they allegedly told Inspector Peter Ouma that they had been given share transfer forms to sign, despite knowing the information to be untrue.

Prosecutors said the alleged false statements prompted the investigator to pursue an inquiry that would not have been undertaken had accurate information been disclosed.

All three accused persons pleaded not guilty and were released on bond of Sh1.5 million each with two sureties of a similar amount, or a cash bail of Sh700,000.

The court also ordered them to deposit their passports and set the matter for pre-trial directions on January 20, 2026.
