Diplomatic missions in Tanzania including the British and Canadian High Commissions and the embassies of Norway, Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, and the European Union Delegation have jointly called for accountability and transparency following the deaths and injuries reported after the recent elections.
In a joint statement issued on Friday, December 5, the missions urged the Tanzanian government to act swiftly and uphold the fundamental rights of all citizens.
They expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and the many injuries recorded, and emphasized the need for security forces to exercise maximum restraint.

The diplomats also reminded the government of its obligations to protect fundamental freedoms, including access to information and freedom of expression.
They cited credible reports from both domestic and international organisations documenting serious human rights violations, such as extrajudicial killings, disappearances, arbitrary arrests, and the concealment of bodies.
The missions further called for the immediate release of all bodies to their families, the freeing of political detainees, and access to legal and medical assistance for those still in custody.
The mission urged the government to act on AU and SADC observer recommendations outlining serious flaws in the electoral process.
It also welcomed the government’s commitment to uncovering the causes of recent violence but stressed that any investigation must be independent, transparent, and inclusive.
The statement came a day after the U.S. announced it was reviewing its relationship with Tanzania over recent government actions.
