Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo Impeached by County Assembly

Nyamira County Governor Amos Nyaribo was on Tuesday, November 25, impeached by the County Assembly.

Twenty-three Members of the County Assembly voted to remove him from office over allegations that included abuse of office and gross violation of the Constitution.

Out of the 28 MCAs present during the sitting, 23 supported the motion, while 12 other members were absent.

The impeachment motion was sponsored by Bonyamatuta MCA Julius Kimwomi Matwere. Four additional MCAs submitted written requests to the Speaker seeking to have their votes counted.

The motion detailed claims of serious misconduct, among them abuse of office and breaches of the Constitution and other laws, issues that have been at the center of previous attempts by the Assembly to oust Nyaribo.

The successful impeachment brings to a close a long-running power struggle between Governor Nyaribo and county legislators, a standoff that began in 2023.

Over the last two years, the Assembly has repeatedly sought to remove the governor, citing allegations that included mismanagement, nepotism and failure to remit statutory deductions.

Impeachment attempts in both 2024 and 2025 narrowly failed, each falling short by just one vote.

The special sitting in which the latest motion was tabled had been gazetted by Speaker Nyabaro on November 13, 2025, with the impeachment notice listed as the sole agenda item.

Following the Assembly’s approval of the motion, the matter now proceeds to the Senate, which will carry out its own inquiry and determine whether to uphold or overturn the impeachment.
