President Museveni Pushes for Regional Military Cooperation in East Africa

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has stirred fresh debate in the region after calling for the formation of an East African Federation, a joint military framework intended to unite the armed forces of neighbouring countries.

He argued that such a bloc would strengthen collective security and enhance the region’s ability to respond to emerging threats.

Addressing the press on Thursday, November 20, at the Mayuge State Lodge in Uganda, Museveni said the initiative would significantly boost the region’s defence capabilities and guarantee long-term stability.

The proposed Federation would bring together the militaries of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Somalia, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), forming what he described as a powerful and cohesive regional force.

During the briefing, Museveni lamented the limited military strength of many African countries and questioned why the continent has been vulnerable to foreign interventions.

He cited the invasion of Libya as an example of Africa’s inability to respond collectively, stressing that stronger regional military cooperation is crucial to prevent similar situations in the future.
