Onyonka Signals Possible Move from ODM to Jubilee Party

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has hinted at a potential shift from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to the Jubilee Party ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In an interview on Monday, November 10, Onyonka noted that Kenya’s political landscape is evolving, and his decisions will reflect the realities on the ground.

“I have great respect for ODM, but politics in Kenya is changing. If joining Jubilee increases my chances of retaining my seat, that is a path I may consider,” he noted.

Onyonka also indicated that his relationship with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i could influence his choice.

“My honest observation is that because I’ve taken my space and time to support Fred Matiangi and it’s a risk in personal determination and what you do with it, is that if Fred Matiangi asks me to join Jubilee, I would seriously consider that and join him. If he doesn’t, then I’m comfortable remaining in my ODM,” he added.

Onyonka moreover emphasized that he remains on good terms with ODM’s leadership and is comfortable with any coalition arrangements the party may pursue.

His remarks come months after he dismissed reports suggesting ongoing talks between Fred Matiang’i and President William Ruto.

On July 2, Onyonka stated that there were no discussions with any government officials regarding the 2027 elections.
