3 Nabbed in Connection with Wines and Spirits Theft Ring

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested three suspects believed to be members of a notorious gang behind a string of wines and spirits robberies.

In a statement, the DCI said the suspects are part of a syndicate that has been terrorizing shop owners within Nairobi and its outskirts, breaking into their premises and stealing goods under the cover of darkness.

The trio was apprehended following days of intense surveillance, after detectives received a tip-off from members of the public linking them to the crimes.

Acting on intelligence, officers pounced on the first two suspects at their residence in Ngara, arresting them before launching a manhunt for their accomplice.

The arrest turned dramatic after two suspects fled upon spotting detectives, abandoning a black Toyota Harrier that was seized as evidence.

A forensic trail led officers to a third suspect in Njiru’s Makongeni area, where a black Toyota Noah believed to have ferried stolen liquor was recovered.

Detectives noted that the car still reeked of spilt alcohol.

Further investigations led to the alleged mastermind’s residence in Mugutha, Ruiru, where officers found car seats from the Noah, break-in tools, phones, a hoodie seen on CCTV, and empty cartons of expensive liquor.

At his second home in Njiru, police also recovered 25 stolen bulls now held at Ruai Police Station.

Authorities are still tracking down the ringleader behind the robberies.
