The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has appointed Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga as the Acting Party Leader following the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 16, the party announced that the decision was reached during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, where members unanimously endorsed Oburu to assume the role in an acting capacity.
Oburu, Raila’s elder brother, has long been an influential figure within the ODM party, frequently serving in an advisory capacity on key matters.

Earlier in the year, he made headlines after criticizing Siaya Governor James Orengo for his comments on the broad-based government, telling him to step aside if he was unhappy with the party’s direction.
While addressing residents in Migori on Sunday, May 4, Oburu Oginga expressed disappointment in Governor James Orengo’s remarks, emphasizing that ODM’s decision to join the broad-based government was a collective party resolution made in unity.
Earlier, on Wednesday, April 30, Orengo had stated in Siaya that he was prepared to organize demonstrations or even face imprisonment again, accusing the government of inefficiency and lack of direction.
In a separate development, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has declared Friday, October 17, a public holiday in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The announcement was made through a gazette notice issued on Thursday, October 16.
