Global Spotlight: Rose Njeri Joins TIME100 Next List of Emerging Leaders

Technology activist Rose Njeri has received international recognition after being listed in the prestigious TIME100 Next 2025.

In her remarks on Tuesday, September 30, Njeri said the honor was not hers alone, but also a tribute to everyone who has walked with her and contributed to her journey.

Her achievement has drawn tributes from national leaders, with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka praising her innovation and courage.

Kalonzo lauded her for crafting a platform that not only resonates with the youth but also drives international conversations.

The TIME100 Next list, published annually by TIME magazine, celebrates emerging leaders, innovators, activists, and creators worldwide.

Unlike the well-known TIME100, which honors established figures, the TIME100 Next highlights the next generation of visionaries shaping the future.

Rose Njeri’s path to recognition has faced obstacles.

On May 30, she was arrested at her Nairobi home, with police seizing her electronic devices and allegedly forcing her to surrender passwords.

After four nights at Pangani Police Station, she was moved to an undisclosed location without her family or lawyers being notified.

Amnesty Kenya later said she was held incommunicado and denied access to legal counsel.

When finally arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts, Njeri faced charges under Section 16 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act.

Prosecutors argued that her online tool, which let citizens email MPs to oppose the 2025 Finance Bill, amounted to interference.

She was released on a Ksh100,000 personal bond as the court considered the matter.

On June 20, 2025, Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo dismissed the case, declaring the charges defective and ambiguous, and struck them out entirely.
